Kolkata: A squall over Kolkata on Saturday night dragged the minimum temperature down by nearly five notches on Sunday. However, in the absence of rain, it shot up again on Monday. At night, parts of the city received light rain along with lightning. The Met office expects more nor'wester spells in the next five days, which could push the mercury down again.
"The chances of thundershower activities in Kolkata in the next five days are bright, during which we can expect one or two spells at least on two days," said H R Biswas, head of the weather forecast section at Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.
Howrah, South and North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, and other southern districts also received rain on Monday.
Kolkata got its second squall of the season late on Saturday night, with Alipore recording wind speeds gusting up to 62 kmph. While the Met office recorded only 2.5 mm of rain during the thundershower activities on Saturday night, the gusty wind pulled the minimum down below the normal mark after a week.
On Monday, though the maximum temperature — at 33.8°C — remained below the normal mark in Kolkata, the ‘feel like' temperature was around seven degrees higher. The Met office has predicted both day and night temperatures to dip by Tuesday.
According to a special weather bulletin from IMD, three combined conditions — an upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Bangladesh, a trough in westerlies, and a favourable wind pattern and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal — will trigger moderate to severe thunderstorm activity over various districts in the next five days.
