Waqf Bill: IUML to move SC on Monday
Kozhikode: IUML national general secretary PK Kunhalikutty said that the party would approach the Supreme Court against Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Monday. Kunhalikutty visited New Delhi on Sunday to hold talks with senior lawyer Kapil Sibal. Samastha will also move the apex court against the Bill.
Kunhalikutty said that the Waqf Bill is an issue of infringement of minority rights.
"As such a law has passed on the strength of majority in the Parliament, the next advisable step is to challenge it in Supreme Court. As that constitutionally provided option is available before us, we will do so by engaging one of the top lawyers available in the country. A meeting has been fixed with Kapil Sibal tomorrow. Now they are eyeing the property of one community and tomorrow the same issue will happen to others as well. Already that have said that another minority community holds the largest extend of property," he said.
"Their aim is political, and they have a national agenda as being witnessed in Manipur and Madya Pradesh. There is no point in linking the Waqf Bill and Munambam issue. The Munambam issue can be resolved by the state government itself and IUML has made it clear that it will provide all necessary support to resolve it," he said, adding was BJP was trying to politically exploit the Munambam issue.
Meanwhile, Samastha Kerala Jem Iyyathul Ulema, the body of Sunni scholars, too will move the Supreme Court against the Waqf Bill, saying that it was violating the fundamental rights of the minority community protected under Article 26 of the Constitution.
IUML had announced that it would hold a ‘Waqf Protection Rally' to be held in Kozhikode on April 16.
