Lucknow: At least 16 people were injured when a sleeper bus overturned in Gonda district on Saturday morning. Police said four of the injured were critical and were referred to the medical college in Gonda for better treatment.
The bus which was carrying passengers from Delhi to Nawabganj diverted to a narrow single-lane road to avoid a closed railway crossing and an RTO checking operation. While passing through Bargadi Kot towards Karnailganj, the bus got entangled with an overhead electric wire near Babupurwa.
Police said that to prevent damage, the driver applied brake suddenly causing one of the wheels to come off. The bus lost balance and overturned, crashing into the house of one BK Singh. A woman named Priyanka, who was cooking inside the house, also sustained injuries in the incident, police said.
Locals and police officials rescued passengers trapped in the bus. According to officials, the bus was overloaded with goods brought from Delhi, which contributed to the loss of control. The bus driver and cleaner fled spot.
A team led by station house officer (SHO) Sridhar Pathak assisted in taking the injured to a nearby hospital and used a JCB machine to move the bus off the road.
The injured were identified as Bhawani Singh (40), Shiva (10), Seema Singh (42), Jatashankar (36), Radha (34), Kanhiya (42), Ramesh Sharma (28), Sulochana Devi (26), Ganesh (15), Poonam, and Raksharam.
