Lucknow: A man was stabbed to death while two others sustained injuries following a dispute over jumping a queue of people waiting for food in a ‘bhandara' outside Hanuman Setu on Tuesday.
Police said that the victim, Lav Kush of Barabanki, sustained six stab wounds on his vital organs, and added that the body was handed over to his family after autopsy.
The assailant, Pintu alias Surendra of Rae Bareli, has been arrested and police are investigating his criminal past. Police said that a feast (‘bhandara') was organised at the parking lot of the Hanuman Setu temple at around 7.30pm on Tuesday. During the distribution of meal, Pintu allegedly jumped the queue in a bid to get the food first. Lav Kush, Mohammed Farid and Rajan David, who were waiting for their turn in the front opposed Pintu's move.
Pintu had a verbal duel with the trio, and in a fit rage, whipped out a knife and attacked them. Police said that all of them sustained injuries and were admitted to the trauma centre of KGMU. Lav Kush, who sustained grievous injury, died during treatment.
The attacker was overpowered and thrashed by the crowd and handed over to the police.
"Pintu went berserk and attacked us with a knife. He also intimidated others when they tried to stop him. Pintu was behind in the queue and wanted to get the meal first," Rajan David, one of the injured persons, informed the police.
The organisers said that crowd was common during ‘bhandaras' but this kind of violent incident had never taken place in the past.
Assistant commissioner of police, Mahanagar, Neha Tripathi said the attacker had been arrested and further investigations were on.
