Ludhiana: A hosiery factory worker on the way to the factory after collecting cash was allegedly robbed of around Rs 15 lakh on the elevated road near Chhawani Mohalla at around 2.30pm on Saturday. The victim was travelling on a scooter when the two accused, also on a scooter, allegedly waylaid him and snatched his cash bag. The victim suffered injuries after being knocked off his bike. Police have doubts about the actual amount stolen and said that this was yet to be confirmed.
The incident comes in the wake of three robberies over the past week, belying the police commissioner's claims of increased police presence on city roads.
On Thursday night, six individuals robbed a grocery store owner of Rs 2 lakh at Jassian Road on gunpoint. On Wednesday night, a couple who ran a department store in upscale Kitchlu Nagar were robbed of Rs 10,000. On April 25, six robbers targeted a grocery store in Jeevan Nagar and escaped with Rs 4,000 cash. The grocery store owner had collected Rs 70,000 cash from the drawer minutes before the robber barged in.
On Saturday, Rajpal Chaudhary, 51, from Bahadurke Road, said that he collected payment from different locations, the last one from Field Gunj, and was heading towards his factory to deposit the money. He added that he had placed the bag of cash on the footrest of the scooter.
Chaudhary said that two individuals on a bike snatched the bag on the elevated road. Knocked down and injured, he tried to take the help of passersby to apprehend the accused but failed. Then, he informed his employers and the police. He said that the accused may have been following him before striking on the elevated road.
Inspector Harpreet Singh, SHO, division number 4 police station, said that investigation had been launched. However, he also expressed scepticism about the amount stolen on the grounds that Rajpal had a dubious record.
He said that in April 2024, Rajpal lodged a complaint with Daresi police claiming that he went to a bank in Sunder Nagar to deposit Rs 3.80 lakh when some unidentified persons stole the cash from his scooter. Police arrested the accused and found that the actual amount stolen was Rs 1.50 lakh.
