The Madurai city police arrested a 27-year-old man who allegedly attacked an 80-year-old beggar woman with a log at the East Veli Street signal on Saturday.

MADURAI: The Madurai city police arrested a 27-year-old man who allegedly attacked an 80-year-old beggar woman with a log at the East Veli Street signal on Saturday.
The woman, identified as T Lingammal of Ambedkar Nagar in Villapuram Kanmoi area, suffered injuries in the attack. She was admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital.
The accused has been identified as B Sathish Raj, 27, of Keerathurai. Sathish, who used to work for a canned water company, is jobless now.
Inquiries revealed that the woman had sought alms from him whenever he had crossed the signal. Sathish, who had been depressed over not getting a job, was irked when the woman sought alms from him on Saturday, police said.
The South Gate police registered a case and arrested him on Sunday.
