Madurai: Alleging that the Madurai police are planning to kill her husband in a fake encounter, Divya, the wife of notorious rowdy Kalimuthu alias Vellaikali, petitioned the state human rights commissioner, V Kannadasan, pleading to protect her husband's life.
Vellaikali is in Puzhal prison in Chennai as a convict prisoner. Divya, in her petition, stated that Madurai police are planning to take him into custody for interrogation in Glamour Kali's murder case.
P Kaleeswaran, alias Kali, was killed by a gang on March 22 in Austinpatti police limits. Police arrested six people, including Vellaikali's mother, Jeyakodi. Meanwhile, Vellaikali's friend, Subash Chandrabose, was encountered by the city police on March 31. Divya stated that Chandrabose was detained on March 30 but was shot dead the next day.
Citing this, Divya said that her husband, Vellaikali, who was involved in Kali's murder, may be encountered like Chandrabose. So, she appealed to the SHRC to intervene and ensure that her husband's life is protected during police custody and that his basic rights are safeguarded. Divya's petition was seconded by P Pugalenthi, director of prisoners rights forum, a Chennai based rights organisation.
