MUMBAI: A student from a Thane-based engineering college filed a police complaint on Friday after a group of five state transport (ST) employeesa bus driver and conductorsbeat him up at the Borivli (E) bus depot.Kaushal Shah (21) had attempted to climb into an ST bus from the driver's entrance, after he found the main door shut. Driver Shivaji Mandhare then pulled him out and slapped him.
Later, when Shah approached the station controller at the depot to complain, Mandhare and his colleagues locked him inside the cabin and rained blows on him.
The Kasturba Marg police arrested Mandhare (56) and conductor Suresh Phadtare (38) on charges of causing hurt and wrongful confinement.Shah, a resident of Kandivli (W), is a second-year student of the Parshwanath Engineering college in Thane. "On Friday, I had reached the Sukhurwadi depot around 7.45 am. But there were no Thane-bound buses available for a long time. Around 8.30 am, the first bus pulled in and a large crowd gathered at the door," Shah said. The driver had locked the main door from inside. A group of students then decided to enter the bus from the driver's entrance. Shah also joined in. "I had barely climbed up when the bus driver pulled me out and slapped me," Shah said. Shah then went to meet the station controller at the depot. "When I told the controller that the bus driver had misbehaved with me, he said I should go to the police. When the driver heard that I was going to file an FIR, he and his colleagues, started thrashing me after locking the door from inside. I kept screaming throughout the 10-minute ordeal," he said.Shah's classmates informed his parents as well as the Student Council Head of their college, Yogesh Murlidharan. Shah was taken to Bhagwati Hospital where he complained of pain in the ribs, swelling on his face and partial lack of hearing. The Kasturba Marg police have registered Shah's complaint but are yet to identify the other drivers who were involved in his assault. "This is not the first time that the ST staff has misbehaved with students," Murlidharan said, adding, "Despite a large number of students travelling from Borivli to colleges in Thane, few buses are available. We want a dedicated bus service."
