MUMBAI: The coastal road project is nearing another milestone — its only vehicular underpass (VUP) is ready and likely to open to traffic next month. The length of this underpass is 550 mt. It runs beneath a section of Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road in Worli.
The underpass will allow motorists from Prabhadevi direct access to the Coastal Road, bypassing the usual route via RJ Thadani Chowk/Bindu Madhav Chowk.
Designed for seamless connectivity, the VUP splits into two arms — one leads to south Mumbai, the other, elevated over a bridge, diverts traffic towards Bandra. Officials say this new link will decongest key intersections and cut down travel time by a few minutes.
Also, once the 4.5-km long and 17-m wide Sewri-Worli connector, currently under construction, is ready, the ramp of the same would end before the JK Kapur Chowk. This would allow motorists coming via this connector also to smoothly connect to Marine Drive or Bandra via the coastal road.
"Most of the work is completed, including concreting of the road," said an official. This is the only vehicular underpass that is a part of the project.
Besides this, the 10 km road has around 16 pedestrian underpasses (PUPs) to allow pedestrians from the land or even areas where landscaping is being proposed towards the seaside promenade.
