Mumbai: In a shocking and gruesome incident in Mulund a 56-year-old man brutally assaulted his 72-year-old mother-in-law inside a tempo, set her on fire, and then he set himself on fire .Both of them died in the incident. The deceased have been identified as Krishna Daji Ashtankar (56) and his mother-in-law Babi Daji Usare (72).
According to the police, Krishna was frustrated and enraged over his wife's separation from him. He suspected his mother-in-law of influencing his wife's decision, leading to frequent conflicts. Krishna, a tempo driver, had been living alone in his vehicle after his wife left him five to six months ago to take care of a patient in Borivli. On Monday, Krishna lured his mother-in-law into his tempo under the pretext of taking her to the hospital. Once inside, he locked the shutter, attacked her with a heavy object, doused her in petrol, and set her on fire. In the process, Krishna was also engulfed in flames and sustained fatal injuries.
Upon receiving an alert, Navghar Police and the fire brigade rushed to the scene, broke open the tempo, and rushed the severely burned duo to Veer Savarkar Hospital, where doctors declared both dead on arrival.
Navghar police have registered a case of murder and attempt to destroy evidence against him. A case of abetment is likely to be filed against deceased Krishna. Further investigation is ongoing. Babi Daji Usare lived with her daughter and 22-year-old grandson in Nanepada, Mulund East. Krishna , a father of two, was struggling with alcohol addiction and loneliness after his wife moved out. His children, a 22-year-old son and a 23-year-old married daughter, were living separately
