MUMBAI: A 28-year-old woman, her paramour and two of his friends were booked for the murder of the woman's husband at Goregaon East. Two of the four accused have been arrested so far and two are on the run.
On March 15, Chandrashekhar Chauhan, 36, was found dead at his residence in Goregaon's Banjaripada. His wife, Ranju, told the police she had last seen him alive at 1.30 am when she went to bed. She told the police that someone had been knocking on their door in the early hours for the past few days and her husband stepped out to find out who it was.
She added that she had woken up around 5.45 am and went about her daily routine and found her husband sleeping nearby. But her husband did not wake up that day. She then called up her brother-in-law who stays at Dadar. Her brother-in-law sensed something amiss and approached the Dindoshi police. Officials found strangulation marks on Chauhan throat.
During investigations, police found some holes in Ranju's story. The police started to keep a watch on her movements. They checked her phone records and found that she had made calls to several people at night. Some of these calls ran into several minutes. One of these numbers belonged to one Shahrukh, but he had switched off his phone.
The police then checked Shahrukh's call records and found certain numbers that he had dialled frequently. One of the numbers belonged to Moinuddin Khan, 20. Police tracked down his location. Khan admitted that he, Shahrukh and another male associate were involved in the murder. Police learnt that Ranju and Shahrukh were having an affair and wanted to get rid of Chauhan who was an alcoholic.
So far, Ranju and Khan have been arrested while two others are wanted.
