HASSAN: A pit bull dog saved a family and labourers from being attacked by a cobra and died after a 40-minute fight. Before dying, six-year-old Bheema cut the 12-foot-long cobra into 11 pieces.
The incident was reported from the farmhouse of Shamanth Gowda, a civil engineer who runs a fair price shop in Kattaya village, which is located 15km from the district headquarters, Hassan. Around 3.15pm on Wednesday, the cobra tried to sneak into the poultry farm of Gowda. A few labourers and their children were playing at that time. The snake was hidden beneath the coconut fronds. Ruby, a female doberman, rushed to attack it when Bheema noticed the snake and jumped to save his friend.
"Fighting with snakes is not new for Bheema. He killed around 15 poisonous snakes in the plantation. He is so strong that he was not even allowing the leopards to enter the plantation," Gowda recalled. "In the beginning, the snake bit Bheema near his nose, but he didn't care. He continued to fight with the snake. After around a 40-minute fight, he cut the snake into 11 pieces and breathed his last," he said.
"I bought him from my friend's house when he was a cub. He is a strong-built pet," Gowda said. "We buried him in our plantation itself as a mark of respect for his service in protecting our farm," he said.
