Protests against reopening of madrassa in Mys City
Mysuru: Within days after the Mysuru DC, Lakshmikanth Reddy, allowed the reopening of an madrassa in the communally-sensitive Kyathamaranahalli in Udayagiri, people in Kyathamaranahalli opposed it on Sunday.
They said it affects the communal harmony in the area and asked the DC to reverse his order. They held a meeting at the Huliya, mma Temple in the area and said they would launch an agitation. Family members of Raju, the right-wing activist who was killed for opposing the madrassa in 2016, joined the protest.
The locals said that on April 2, the DC issued permission to reopen the Arabic school at the disputed site. It was a unilateral decision by the DC. The building was constructed illegally. It was constructed in a residential area, and the land was not converted before the school was opened, in violation of the CDP too. Still, the DC issued permission, which is highly objectionable, they said.
They demanded the CM, Siddaramaiah, to intervene immediately and withdraw the permission issued by the district administration.
Speaking on the occasion, Chandramma, mother of the late Raju, warned that she would launch a protest with Raju's family if the illegal structure is not destroyed. "There is no question of withdrawing the opposition," she said.
The locals informed that every year numerous festivals are celebrated in the temple, and processions are carried out. "As the Arabic madrasas is on the main road, there is a fear of violence every time," they said.
"We want peace. Children of all communities and religions must grow. We want a cordial, peaceful relationship with all. That is why we are against this madrassa here," they informed.
"We communicated our concerns to the DC in two meetings. Still, permission is given. We already moved the high court," they said.
