Nashik: A tree along the road near the govt guest house in the city fell on a truck on Monday morning, causing extensive damage to the vehicle. In another incident, a dried-up tree caught fire in the afternoon.
The driver of the truck that was damaged escaped with minor injuries to his shoulder and hands. He was taken to the Nashik Civil Hospital. The incident took place at 11am, and the traffic on the road was affected for close to an hour. Vehicles had to be diverted to another route. "Our personnel reached the spot as soon as they received the information, and removed the uprooted tree," said an official of Nashik Municipal Corporation's fire brigade department.
Meanwhile, at 2pm, a dried-up tree caught fire near Ramayan bungalow, the mayoral residence, near the Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan. NMC's fire brigade reached the spot and doused the fire. They said some unidentified people had set fire to waste at the bottom of the dried-up tree, causing it to catch fire. "Our firemen immediately doused the blaze," said a fire brigade official.
On April 13, a 55-year-old woman died after a tree branch fell on her in the Gangapur Road area of Nashik city. Her 30-year-old son, who was accompanying her, escaped with minor injuries. A branch of a large tree also fell in the College Road area of the city on the same day, but no one was there at the time, and no major damage was reported.
After the incident, the garden department of the Nashik civic body conducted a survey and identified around 200 "dangerous" trees, some of which were dried up, and some had weak structures. NMC officials said they will be removing all the dried-up trees and also other dangerous trees. In some cases, the branches of the trees would be trimmed.
