Dy CM: Farmers of 8 dists to get Rs 8 cr compensation for crop damage
Patna: Deputy CM-cum-agriculture minister, Vijay Kumar Sinha, said his department would pay slightly over Rs 8.39 crore as compensation to farmers of eight districts whose crops were damaged due to the inclement weather in the first fortnight of April.
The compensation money would be paid to the farmers under the agriculture input subsidy scheme of the state govt.
While inclement weather conditions were reported across the state, the farmers of eight districts, including Supaul, Nalanda, Samastipur, Gaya, Madhubani, Nawada, Madhepura, and Begusarai, were most affected, Sinha said in a communique.
He said the agriculture department asked the DMs of all the districts to send details of the crop damage. The reports from the DMs of eight districts have been received by the department, he added.
Only the farmers who suffered more than 33% of crop damage have been considered for the compensation. He said the money would be transferred into their bank accounts through the direct benefit transfer (DBT).
Meanwhile, the agriculture department has asked the disaster management department (DMD) to transfer the compensation amount to it, after which the money would be transferred to the bank accounts of the affected farmers.
Sinha said the standing crops of the farmers were hit by the storm, untimely rain, and hailstorm that occurred in different parts of the state on April 9, 10, and 14. The crops damaged included cereal crops like pre-harvested wheat, and cash crops like maize, pulses (garma moong, urad, and arhar), ‘til' (sesame) and groundnut, as well as vegetables like onion; betel leaf and banana.
Sinha said the Union govt under PM Narendra Modi and the state govt led by CM Nitish Kumar are committed to protecting the interests of farmers.
