Patna: Yet another young life was cut short on Saturday when Surendra Kumar, a 26-year-old second-year MBBS student of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur, died late Friday night, sending shock waves through the medical college community. The hospital's medical team said Surendra died due to "cardiac arrest".
College officials said Surendra, a native of Saharsa, suddenly felt cold and vomiting inside his hostel room during the night. To provide him relief, his friends provided a room heater and medication after consulting a doctor. However, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to the emergency ward of the SKMCH. Despite the best efforts of the doctors, he could not be saved, they said.
According to the SKMCH officials, Surendra, after taking his second-year medical exam on Friday, returned to his room. But suddenly, he started feeling cold. His friends turned on the room heater and, after consulting a doctor, gave him some medicines. However, his condition did not improve, and by Friday night, it worsened. His friends admitted him to the emergency ward of the SKMCH, but despite the doctors' best efforts, they were unable to save him, they said.
Upon receiving news of his death, the hospital management officials, including SKMCH superintendent Dr Kumari Vibha and principal Dr Abha Rani Sinha, visited the hospital to investigate the matter.
SKMCH principal Dr Sinha said: "Surendra complained of cold, and he was vomiting frequently. His colleagues mentioned that Surendra had experienced a severe chest pain about a month ago. He died due to cardiac arrest, as diagnosed by the experts of SKMCH. His family members took the body to their home around 3am on Saturday."
Dr Sinha said the cases of cardiac arrests among young people have increased after the Covid pandemic. Proper arrangements are provided to the students residing in hostels during the winter.
