Ahead of civic elections, BJP shifts focus to younger generation of party functionaries to play a larger role in state
Pune: The BJP, among other parties, is instituting some organizational changes in its state cadre ahead of the civic body elections in Maharashtra, despite the lack of clarity about the poll schedule. Among these changes, the younger generation are being given more responsibilities in every district.
The much-delayed civic polls are expected to be held post-monsoon. Anticipating seven to eight months in hand, many parties have started gearing up for the same. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in particular is looking at an overhaul in terms of giving more importance to new office-bearers on-ground with an eye on the future.
A senior BJP functionary told TOI, "The party is concentrating on the district, tehsil, and block-level members. The senior leadership is working on a plan of appointing functionaries who are less than 50 years of age at the district level. Similarly, the responsibility at the tehsil level will be given to the party members who are less than 40 years old. In this way, the leadership is investing in the youth for the party's future."
Following the BJP's poor performance in Maharashtra during the Lok Sabha elections last year, all major parties of Mahayuti witnessed an outflow of some members towards MVA. However, the picture changed within five months. After a landslide victory in the assembly polls later in 2024, Mahayuti's partners are now seeing MVA members queuing up to join the ruling alliance.
According to senior BJP functionaries, while many MVA members are interested in joining the BJP, the party will have to ensure that the loyalists are not ignored due to the entry of new members.
State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule also recently said that the party is concentrating more on block-level workers to strengthen the party at the booth level.
"We want party workers who will ensure that the party gets 51% votes at the booth level to ensure the victory of our candidates. Therefore, our concentration is at this level," Bawankule said.
