Over 200 flyers stuck at Pune and Delhi airports as SpiceJet flights delayed by 6 hours
Pune: More than 200 flyers of two SpiceJet flights — from Pune to Delhi and Delhi to Pune — faced a harrowing time on Sunday after their flights were delayed by over six hours.
The delay of the Delhi-Pune flight (SG-185), which took off at 3.40 pm, instead of its scheduled departure time of 9.20 am, resulted in many not reaching home on time to celebrate Gudi Padwa with their families. "We received messages every two hours of the flight getting delayed further. The festivities were over at my place when I finally reached home in Hinjewadi around 7.30 pm. It was highly disappointing," a flyer told TOI.
Pushpak Pawar, another flyer, vented his frustration on X (formerly Twitter). "My SpiceJet flight to Pune is delayed by six hours. Stuck at IGI airport instead of celebrating Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra. This is unacceptable and the worst airline experience," he said, tagging the airline, MoS civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol, and DGCA, and adding that strict action should be initiated against the airline. Pawar reached his home in Wakad at 10pm. "I missed all the Gudi Padwa festivities and the chance to be with my family during the festival," he said.
The flight was scheduled to land in Pune by 11.30 am. Instead, it landed around 5.30 pm. "SpiceJet flight SG 185 dated March 30, 2025, scheduled to operate from Delhi to Pune, was delayed due to a technical issue in its previous rotation. Passengers were assisted throughout and were served with refreshments," the airline spokesperson said.
In the second incident, the flight (SG-184), which was scheduled to depart at 6.30 pm from Pune, finally left for Delhi at 12.10 am on Monday. Harsh Rajput, one of the flyers, said, "Every hour, a message would come from the airline, extending the delay. I came to the airport around 4 pm, and it was really frustrating to wait that long."
Randeep Singh, another flyer, wrote on X, "My flight from Pune to Delhi has been delayed by six hours. I was supposed to reach Delhi for a funeral, and this is what the airline has offered as the worst service for the worst time." In a brief conversation with TOI, he said, "I cancelled the flight and am going back home."
The flight was scheduled to land in Delhi at 8.35 pm. "It is high time that the civil aviation ministry holds airlines accountable for the delay. A flyer who is late by a minute after the boarding gate closes is not allowed to board the flight. On the other hand, they just delay flights by hours," Shishir Joshi, a frequent flyer, said.
An airline spokesperson attributed the delay to operational reasons.
