Pune: SDNT Women's University's College of Home Science is planning to open an outlet featuring bakery items, textiles, and jewellery, all crafted and managed by students.
Scheduled to launch in June, Sanskrita aims to offer nutritious food and high-quality clothing and accessories.
"Sanskrita presents a unique opportunity for students to showcase their skills while promoting authentic products," said Ganesh Chavan, principal of SNDT College of Home Science, during a press conference on Tuesday.
"We have students studying food and nutrition. For their projects and dissertations, they come up with innovative ideas and products. We want these products and ideas to reach beyond the four walls of the college and be available for the general public. Hence, we thought of setting up a stall on the campus facing Karve Road," said Ganesh Chavan.
Chavan said that apart from the commercial aspect of the project, the platform also aims to help students understand the concept of business. "They will create a plan for each product, design everything, conduct a cost analysis, analyse competition, and price items competitively. They will take advance orders and fulfil them, conduct audits, and understand what works and what doesn't. This will help students to become self-reliant entrepreneurs," said Chavan.
Products from all specialisations — nutrition and dietetics, food science and quality control, textile science and apparel design, human development, interior design, and human ecology and consumer services — are expected in the shop.
"Home science is not a course which deals with just eating and cooking. It develops employability skills among students and empowers them," added Chavan.
