HC upholds death penalty to JSR man for killing 4 persons
Ranchi: Holding the murder of four persons as "horrendous and rarest of rare", Jharkhand High Court on Monday upheld a death sentence granted to convict Deepak Kumar for committing the heinous offence.
The division bench of Justices Rongon Mukhopadhyay and Arun Kumar Rai passed their verdict, confirming the death sentence granted to Deepak by a Special Judge of Fast Track Court Jamshedpur on April 1, 2023.
Deepak, a resident of Jamshedpur and employed as a fire services employee in Tata Group, was married to Veena Devi and had two minor daughters from the wedlock. Special public prosecutor Vineet Kumar Vashisht said that Deepak was motivated by a couple of OTT thriller series and committed the murders using a hammer. "He copied the character of a while committing the gruesome murders," Vashisht said.
On April 12, 2021, Deepak, after having the watched a series, went to his wife while she was sleeping and assaulted her with a hammer. Then he went to the bedroom of his daughters whom he assaulted with the hammer and smothered them with a pillow. He then packed the three bodies of his wife and two daughters and was getting ready to meet his business partner, Roshan, whom he had invited for lunch. Deepak also had plans to kill Roshan due to business rivalry.
In the meantime, the tuition teacher of Deepak's younger daughter came to the house to take her class. Seeing the bodies, the teacher cried for help. Deepak then throttled her neck and killed her. While pulling the tuition teacher, out of the room, Kumar also violated her sexually. Roushan along with his brother and wife had come for lunch. Kumar assaulted Roushan and his brother Ankit with the hammer but was overpowered. Roshan's wife ran outside the house and cried for help and were taken to hospital while Deepak left the house.
It was later known that Deepak sold Veena's jewelleries for cash, deleted his social media accounts and fled on his bike. He was arrested from Dhanbad based on Veena's brother's complaint.
The bench observed that Deepak's act was "horrendous and did not deserve any sympathy."
