NEW DELHI: Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been suspended due to a landslide in the Mehad area of Ramban, while severe weather conditions persist across the region with snowfall in Banihal and rainfall in Bhaderwah.
The Border Roads Organisation has also initiated the construction of the Bhimber Gali Tunnel on National Highway 144A, aimed at improving connectivity between Rajouri and Poonch.
Authorities are currently working to clear the debris from the landslide-affected area, and drivers have been advised to use alternative routes.
The weather conditions in the region remain challenging, with Banihal's mountains covered in snow following recent snowfall. The area recorded a minimum temperature of 3°C, with the maximum expected to reach 15°C.
Bhaderwah is experiencing rainfall with low-hanging clouds, while Doda's landscape has transformed into a scenic view with snow-capped mountains against the backdrop of ongoing rainfall.
"We are unable to stand because of the cold. We will never forget this place and send our people and family again and again. People her in Kashmiri are very friendly and nice. Next time, we are going to plan with our families," said CHVS Reddy, a tourist from Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
The Border Roads Organisation conducted the inaugural blast for the construction of the 1.1-kilometer-long Bhimber Gali Tunnel on National Highway 144A, led by Brig Neeraj Madan, Chief Engineer of Project Sampark.
According to the BRO statement: "The inaugural blast for the 1.1 km Bhimber Gali Tunnel on NH-144A was conducted today by Brig Neeraj Madan, CE Project Sampark. This key BRO project will cut 10.8 km from the highway, boosting connectivity between Rajouri and Poonch for civilians and the Army."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Sonamarg tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting its importance for connectivity and tourism in the region.
"Despite the challenges, our resolve did not waver," stated PM Modi, who praised the laborers for their commitment while also expressing condolences for the seven workers who lost their lives.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the Sonamarg Tunnel would benefit people in Sonamarg, Kargil, and Leh, noting that actual construction began in 2015 after his government came to power and was completed under their administration.
