Thiruvananthapuram: Personating as assistant deputy commissioner in Indian Revenue Service (IRS), an unidentified man cheated a city-based 26-year-old youth of Rs 21 lakh by offering a job in revenue department at a salary of Rs 75,000 per month.
The accused reached the man's house in a car which had his designation written on it and a fake offer letter was also sent to him. The man realized it was a scam after contacting revenue department regarding his joining.
The crime was executed by first accused Akhil, who posed as an IRS officer and Rahul, who claimed to be Akhil's friend.
The victim got acquainted with Akhil on social media. Through chats, Akhil shared his identity cards with the victim and informed him that there was a vacancy in central revenue department. The victim was promised a job if an amount was paid to satisfy some higher-ups.
Believing this to be true, the victim paid some money to process his request and the remaining amount was paid after Rahul sent an offer letter to him on WhatsApp.
Following this, the victim paid the full amount to the accused. However, he was not allowed to join when he contacted the department. The offer letter was also found to be a forged one.
