State human rights commission takes suo motu case on plastic kanikonna usage during Vishu
Thiruvananthapuram: The state human rights commission (SHRC) registered a suo motu case over the widespread sale of plastic kanikonna (golden shower flowers) across the state during Vishu festivities. With the availability of real kanikonna flowers declining, plastic versions started to dominate the market, especially in urban areas.
Though these artificial flowers made their way into the market in previous years as well, the SHRC took action this year due to their extensive usage. The commission pointed out the environmental concerns and ethical issues associated with replacing natural flowers with plastic.
As part of the proceedings, SHRC issued notices to local self-governing bodies across the state. The case is expected to be reviewed during the commission's sitting scheduled for May.
