Vadodara: A large piece of concrete from the parapet of a gallery on an ageing high-rise building fell, in the posh Alkapuri area on Wednesday morning. A rickshaw parked under the building was damaged by it.
Darpan Complex in Alkapuri was sealed after the Rajkot gaming zone fire, as it did not meet fire safety standards. The complex was old and pieces of loose plaster and other material had been falling from it for some time. The building, which has eight floors, was partially occupied.
Sources said since the building was very old, its design made it difficult to update fire safety measures. The complex used to have prominent business establishments, but they have now shifted.
Sources added attempts were being made to take up a redevelopment project at the site. Given the condition of the complex, officials were considering ensuring that some safety measures were taken at the site. The driver of the rickshaw in question was unhurt.
