Varanasi gang-rape case: One more held, total arrests at 14

Varanasi police have apprehended Raj Khan, another suspect in the gang rape case involving a 19-year-old girl, bringing the total arrests to 14. The survivor was allegedly drugged and raped by 23 individuals over a week. Prime Minister Modi has sought updates on the investigation. DCP Chandrakant Mina, who was leading the investigation, has been reassigned.

VARANASI: In the case of gang rape of a 19-year-old girl by 23 individuals in a week, Lalpur Pandeypur cops arrested one more accused, Raj Khan, and sent him to jail after producing him before the court on Wednesday.
ACP Cantt Vidush Saxena on Wednesday said that Raj Khan was among the identified accused persons in this case. He was arrested on Tuesday evening and sent to jail on Wednesday after being produced before court.
With this, the number of total arrests in the case reached 14. He added that, of 12 identified, 11 were arrested while the search for others continued. Efforts are ongoing for the arrest of other accused persons, he added.
Before Raj Khan, the cops arrested Shahbaj on Monday. This case came to light on April 5 when the parents of the girl lodged a complaint that their daughter, who left home on March 29 and returned on April 4, was drugged and raped by 23 individuals over seven days before she managed to return home. Police lodged an FIR against 23 individuals, including 12 identified, on April 6.
Between April 7 and 11, police arrested 12 accused. During a medical examination, the survivor was diagnosed with hepatitis B.
During his stay at LBSI Airport on April 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought details of actions taken in this sensational case from the Commissioner of Police and other senior officials.
On Monday, DCP Varuna zone Chandrakant Mina, who was leading the investigation in this case, was attached to the DGP office.
