Jana Sena blames past governments for problems in Kolleru region
Vijayawada: The Jana Sena held Congress govt led by former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and the YSRCP responsible for the persistent issues in the Kolleru region. Jana Sena stated that the coalition govt led by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has the responsibility to safeguard both the environment and the livelihoods of those dependent on Kolleru.
Jana Sena officially issued a statement recalling the 2006 ‘Operation Kolleru', in which YS Rajasekhara Reddy's administration demolished fishpond embankments using land bombs, severely impacting local fishermen. Jana Sena accused the operation of being politically motivated, selectively targeting specific ponds while sparing those linked to political allies.
The party highlighted legal and environmental concerns, citing the 1976 GO 118, the 1999 Supreme Court ruling banning commercial aquaculture, and previous governance attempts such as GO 120 by Chandrababu Naidu. Illegal encroachments, which expanded over 70,000 acres, remained unresolved despite promises by YSRCP, which ruled from 2019 to 2024.
Janasena criticised YSRCP's failure to act on its Rs 410 crore plan for regulators to manage water levels, stating that politically connected individuals continued to monopolise illegal fishponds.
Jana Sena stated that deputy CM Pawan Kalyan was consulting experts and residents to formulate a balanced solution, taking inspiration from Chilika Lake in Odisha. Chandrababu Naidu, known for resolving governance challenges, is committed to ensuring Kolleru's sustainable future without political motives, Janasena stated.
