Vijayawada: The local police and YSR Congress leaders were at loggerheads in Mylavaram after a case was registered on Wednesday against constituency in-charge Vasantha Krishna Prasad and his follower Maganti Venkata Ramarao for trying to bribe two sub-inspectors.
Two separate cases were registered at Mylavaram and G Konduru police stations against Krishna Prasad and Ramarao.
Ramarao offered cash to the sub-inspectors on behalf of Krishna Prasad, said the police.
YSRC leaders called for protests on Thursday alleging the cops were acting at the behest of water resource minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao.
Led by Krishna Prasad, YSRC workers gathered in front of the Mylavaram police station. They raised slogans against the cops alleging that YSRC workers were framed in false cases.
Krishna Prasad said that Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao has been resorting to cheap tricks as he is in fear of defeat. Prasad has challenged the cops to release CCTV footage to prove their allegations and accused the cops of trying to settle for compromise after realising their mistake.
The police, however, denied allegations of political influence. Mylavaram inspector Ch Suribabu said Maganti Venkata Ramarao offered cash to sub-inspectors of Mylavaram and G Konduru seeking their support in the elections. We are acting according to law and have evidence to prove Ramarao’s bribe bid, he further said.
