In the popular anime Demon Slayer, viewers are introduced to a plethora of courageous fighters battling deadly demons. Beyond every battle and dazzling swordsman choreography, there’s an emotional enigma at work—the Ubuyashiki family’s curse. They may be the leaders of the Demon Slayer Corps, but their lives have not been easy.
The family’s patriarch, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, is afflicted by a mysterious and painful condition.
His skin is scorched, his body emaciated, and like every man in his family, he is not likely to survive much longer. So why are they doomed and what does it have to do with the fiends they battle against?
The Ubuyashiki family has a rich history as the clan heads of the Demon Slayer corps
The Ubuyashiki family’s curse stretches back more than a thousand years. It turns out that they are all blood relatives of Muzan Kibutsuji, the very first demon and main antagonist in the Demon Slayer franchise. Due to this link, each male born into the family is doomed to suffer from a terrible illness. The curse takes effect by weakening them, it shortens their lifespans and slowly eats them from the inside out.
Women of the family don’t face the same punishment if they are married into different bloodlines. For the men, there is no getting away with this.
Rather than succumb to the curse, the Ubuyashiki family chose to resist it. Many centuries ago, and after the conversion of their family members, they founded the Demon Slayer Corps, a clandestine organization of slayers trained to kill demons and eventually kill Muzan himself. Their aim? To take out the source of the curse, and to save well-meaning folks across the land from suffering the same villainous fate.
While cursed and physically frail, the Ubuyashikis became the intelligence and strategy of the Corps. Though remaining in the background, they trained, guided and inspired the fighters at every step.
Kagaya Ubuyashiki, a leader even amidst pain
In the ongoing arc, Kagaya Ubuyashiki commands the Corps as its 97th leader. Even under the strain of his illness, Kagaya is patient, gentle, and greatly esteemed by all his coworkers. While he may not be able to fight like the other slayers, it’s his profound wisdom and compassion that helps hold the team together. His faith in humanity and his conviction that one day Muzan will be defeated inspire the Demon Slayers to continue battling evil.
Kagaya is, in equal measure, profoundly philosophical. In one particularly crushing scene, he says to Muzan:
"I understand what forever is. Eternity too is as simple a thing as a human feeling. “Only human feelings are eternal and immortal."
While Muzan seeks out immortality through fear and force, Kagaya is a testament to the fact that love and the human spirit are what’s truly eternal.
The Ubuyashiki family’s sacrifice not to be in vain
Each generation of the Ubuyashiki family has given their lives in sanctity to protect and serve the Demon Slayer Corps. They’re not sword-wielding warriors like you might picture a master in Fight Club, but they’re fighters nonetheless, leaders, strategists, and resisters of hope.
Kagaya is acutely aware of how short his time is, but he is determined to finish strong as the head of state. He hopes that someday, the Demon Slayers will defeat Muzan and free the world and his family from this ancient curse.
