In an interview with WIRED, Adam Fry, ChatGPT search product lead at OpenAI shared that people have already been using the tool to search for various items they can shop in many categories including beauty, home goods and electronics. The inclusion of shopping will make the process easier for these consumers.
While people will be able to fill their carts on ChatGPT, checkout will be accessible at the seller's website itself where the user will be directed to complete the transaction.

Well, when ChatGPT suggests a product, it includes your preferences and analyses product reviews from across the internet, thus recommending products that align with your tastes and needs. Thus, ChatGPT will collect information from sources including editorial commerce reviews and forums such as Reddit to get a range of evaluations. “It’s not looking for specific signals that are in some algorithm. It’s trying to understand how people are reviewing this, how people are talking about this, what the pros and cons are,” explained Fry.
Additionally, he added that unlike Google Shopping where shopping is keyword-focused, shopping on ChatGPT would be more personalized and conversational.
While the new feature on the AI app has many similarities to Google Shopping such as retailers listed on the right side of the screen after clicking an item with buttons that lead you to make the purchase, the main difference between the two as of now is that ChatGPT produces organic results rather than paid ads.
"They are not ads. They are not sponsored," affirmed Fry.

If you are excited to shop on ChatGPT, all you need to do is give it a prompt for a specific product and mention any specifications like budget, size, colour or more.

As a result, the AI model will generate a list of the best selections. If there's an item you wish to purchase, you just have to click on it, which will lead to purchasing options appearing on the right side of the screen.
