India is known for its religiosity across the world. Each religion in the country resides in the hearts of its people and is the driving force of their spiritual well-being. From temples to masjids, each holy abode in India is popular for its miraculous powers. One such 500-year-old temple lies in Lord Krishna’s city of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh and is fabled for it’s miraculous healing powers.
The Krishna Kubja Temple is situated on the Parikrama marg in Mathura and is famous for healing any kind of skin disease. It is said that any person with any kind of skin disease can visit this temple and get healed. Another interesting fact about this temple is that it is the only temple in the world where Lord Krishna’s idol does not stand with Goddess Radha Rani and is rather accompanied by a lady called Kubja.

As per Bhagavata Purana, Kubja was a legendary hunchbacked woman in Mathura who was rescued and transformed into a beautiful woman by Lord Krishna. As per the legend, Kubja was a servant of Krishna’s evil uncle Kansa and was collecting an ointment of sandalwood or chandan when Krishna saw her for the first time. He praised her beauty and asked her for the ointment in return for a favour. When Kubja agreed to give him the ointment, Krishna was pleased by her giving nature. So he pressed his toes on her feet, placed a finger from both his hands under her chin and lifted her face. It is said this was when Lord Krishna straightened her figure with his miraculous powers and left the people of Mathura shocked with the act. Thus, people worship both Kubja and Krishna in the Krishna Kubja temple where the leela is believed to have occurred almost 5000 years ago. The belief is that offering a prayer here will rid a person of their physical or skin diseases just like Kubja.
In another text, Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Kubja is considered to be a reincarnation of Surpankha, the sister of Ravana and demoness who vied for Rama, Krishna’s avatar in his previous birth. It is believed that Surpankha’s penance is relieved in her birth as Kubja when her wish to attain Rama is fulfilled. Hence, she receives Krishna spiritually in the form of Kubja.
Currently, because pollution and natural destruction have destroyed its state, the temple remains closed and is only opened when someone requests a visit. Efforts to restore it back to its original divinity have begun and are being carried out by Veda Sankalpa donation centre and Braj Care Foundation.
