NEW DELHI: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Thursday expressed its deepest shock and strongest condemnation of the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists and left many others seriously injured. In a resolution, the party extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, saying, "The Congress Working Committee extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families. It stands with them wholeheartedly in this moment of profound anguish."
Describing the attack as a "cowardly and calculated act of terror, masterminded by Pakistan," the CWC called it a direct assault on the values of the Republic and appealed for calm amid provocation. The resolution also condemned the BJP for "exploiting this grave tragedy through official and proxy social media platforms to sow further discord, mistrust, polarisation and division at a time when unity and solidarity are most needed."
The CWC called for a comprehensive analysis into the intelligence and security failures that enabled such an attack in a heavily guarded Union Territory. It stressed the need for justice and accountability, noting that Pahalgam falls under the jurisdiction of the Union home ministry.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) had convened an emergency meeting on Thursday at its headquarters in Delhi. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge, along with senior leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and others, paid tribute to the victims with a moment of silence.
Rahul Gandhi returned early from the US to attend the meeting. He, along with Kharge, spoke with Union home minister Amit Shah and J&K officials for updates. The Congress called for national unity and urged the government to take decisive action against terrorism without political blame.
