As an extraordinary celestial alignment would have it, Muslims worldwide are set to observe the crescent moon to mark the beginning of Ramadan on the same evening this year.
This unique and auspicious event is possible because countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, France, and Germany all welcomed the month of Shaban 1446 AH on the same day as Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Palestine, Oman, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Turkey, and Egypt. Typically, the moon is first sighted in the Gulf countries, followed by South Asian nations a day later, making this year's synchronization an exceptional occurrence.
Here’s all you need to know about Ramadan 2025.
What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, prayer, and community for Muslims. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is one of the most important months in Islam.
The word Ramadan is derived from the Arabic root R-M-Ḍ "scorching heat", which is the Classical Arabic verb "ramiḍa" meaning "become intensely hot – become burning; become scorching; be blazing; be glowing".
Ramadan is a time for prayer, self-reflection, family gatherings, and charitable acts. A key part of Ramadan is fasting, where adults refrain from eating or drinking during daylight hours as a sign of devotion to their faith and to grow closer to Allah (God). The fasting period ends with a grand three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr.
The exact dates of Ramadan depend on the moon's sighting and can vary from country to country.
The beginning of Ramadan:
The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia and moon sighting committees worldwide have requested Muslims to look for the crescent moon on Friday, February 28, 2025, which corresponds to 29 Sha'ban 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar.
