The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of a popular brand of enoki mushrooms due to potential listeria contamination. This bacterium can pose serious health risks, and sometimes fatal infections in the vulnerable category, including children. Harvest NYC Inc. issued the recall on Apr. 16, and the FDA announced it on Friday, Apr. 18. Here’s everything you need to know about the recall.

What is the recalled product?
The recalled product is the 200g package of Enoki Mushroom distributed by Harvest NYC Inc., based in Brooklyn, New York. The mushrooms are packaged in green plastic and distributed by Hofood99 Inc., located at 21903 56th Ave, Oakland Gardens, NY 11364.
Why is the recalled product?
The enoki mushrooms are being recalled due to a possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause severe infections. The recall was initiated after samples collected from a store in Buffalo, NY, were tested by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Laboratory. They confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in certain 200g packages of enoki mushrooms.
The FDA stated that the listeria can cause serious and sometimes ‘fatal’ infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. “Although healthy persons may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the federal agency alerted.
No illnesses have been reported as of April 18, 2025, but you have to act promptly to avoid potential health risks.
