How to prevent plants from dying and wilting in summers

Protect the plants

Summers are here and so is the scorching heat, full sun, and the warm winds that come with it. And it is sadly one of the worst phases for a plant as the sun can lead to dryness, wilting, scorched leaves, and even dying! And so here are 10 tips to prevent this.

Add some heat-tolerating plants

One of the easiest things you can do in summer is to add some heat-tolerant plants in the balcony garden, especially near the boundaries. Plants like cactus, marigold, and even Snake plants are well-adjusted to hot climates, so there will be some greenery throughout.

Watering

One of the main reasons why plants dry out and die in summers is because the soil gets dry quickly. So make sure to water your plants well atleast once everyday, but do not overwater as that too will lead to root rot.

Mulching

Summers are also the perfect time to start mulching the soil as it helps trap the moisture in and keeps the plants cool. So add in some twigs, dry grass, or even wood chips on top to lock in the water and moisture.

Shade the plants

In the afternoon time, usually between 11 AM to 3 PM, the sun is in all its glory, shining bright and heavy. But this natural light will damage the plants and dry out the leaves, so make sure to either keep the plants inside or shade them with some cloth.

Do not over fertilise

Be it with a powder fertiliser or liquid fertiliser, do not overfertilise in peak summer at all. Fertilisation can stress the plants, and in hot weather, as it struggles to grow, it will just be added problems.

Repot before summer

Another tip to keep the plant healthy during summer is to repot it before the summer sun starts shining. Repot the plant, add fresh soil and plant food, and transfer it to a bigger pot so it has space to grow.

Importance of airflow

Although the harsh summer winds are a headache, by the evening the air is much cooler. So after a sunny day, make sure to remove the cloth you shaded the plant with, and let the leaves have a whiff of fresh air.

Water soil and leaves

While mostly we only water the soil, in summers, make sure to also water or spray the leaves every now and then. If you deep water the plant once everyday, make sure to spray some water on the leaves and stems twice a day.

Trim and prune old leaves

If there are any yellowing leaves or dead leaves, prune them as soon as possible as these too take up energy from the plant.

Water dunk once a week

Another way to keep the plant safe is Water dunking. On hot days, fill a bucket with water, pick up one pot (the small ones), and then dunk it in the bucket to let the soil absorb as much water as it wants. Take it out in a minute or two and keep it back in the balcony.
