Why dark energy is losing its force

Recently, two major research groups—the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) and the Dark Energy Survey (DES)—have collected massive amounts of data by observing millions of galaxies. Their findings suggest that dark energy is not constant; instead, it appears to be losing strength over time.
Why dark energy is losing its force
For decades, scientists have believed that dark energy—the mysterious force driving the universe’s expansion—was constant. However, new research suggests that dark energy might be weakening over time, which could change everything we thought we knew about the fate of the universe.
What Is Dark Energy?
Dark energy is an invisible force that makes up about 70% of the universe. It was first discovered in the late 1990s when scientists noticed that galaxies were moving away from each other at an accelerating rate. This was surprising because gravity should be pulling everything together. The simplest explanation was that space itself had energy, known as the "cosmological constant," which would remain the same forever.
The New Discovery: Dark Energy Is Changing
Recently, two major research groups—the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) and the Dark Energy Survey (DES)—have collected massive amounts of data by observing millions of galaxies. Their findings suggest that dark energy is not constant; instead, it appears to be losing strength over time.
DESI’s data from 15 million galaxies show that dark energy was stronger in the past but has been slowing down over the last six billion years. This was confirmed by DES, which also found inconsistencies with the standard model of cosmology, known as Lambda-CDM (ΛCDM). Together, these findings suggest that dark energy is evolving, which is a big deal because the universe’s future depends on it.
What This Means for the Universe
If dark energy continues to weaken, the expansion of the universe could slow down, stop, or even reverse. This would mean that instead of expanding forever, the universe could eventually collapse in a "Big Crunch." On the other hand, if dark energy fluctuates in strange ways, it could lead to even weirder scenarios, such as a sudden end to the universe.
Why Is This Happening?
Scientists aren’t sure yet. If dark energy is changing, it could mean:
  • A New Type of Particle – There might be an unknown force or particle affecting dark energy.
  • A Mistake in Einstein’s Theory – If gravity works differently than we thought, it could explain why dark energy is evolving.
  • Something Else Entirely – The discovery could point to a completely new theory of physics beyond what we currently understand.

What’s Next?
Scientists are continuing to collect data. DESI is expected to analyze 50 million galaxies by 2027, which should help confirm whether dark energy is truly weakening. If it is, cosmology may undergo a major shift, leading to new theories about the universe.
For years, dark energy was thought to be a constant force pushing galaxies apart. Now, new evidence suggests that it might be losing strength. If confirmed, this would change our understanding of the universe’s future and possibly lead to a new era in physics. Researchers are excited but cautious, as more data is needed to be sure.
