Animal activists of Pure Animal Lovers (PAL) Foundation have reminded the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to allot dog feeding zones inside the Nesco ground in Goregaon (east) so that animal lovers can peacefully feed the surviving community dogs at the site.
In July 2024, several dogs had reportedly died of starvation at this ground because two regular feeders were denied entry into the area by the local guards. The Vanrai police station had also lodged an FIR in this matter. However, the main issue of having feeding zones within this ground is still pending.
Activist and legal advisor of PAL, Roshan Pathak, said: "It has been over eight months since an FIR was filed with regards to the death of 26 dogs at this ground as the feeders were denied access by some guards. In October last year, after we had reminded the civic body to allot feeding zones on this ground in Goregaon, the BMC had issued a notice for the meeting and a deliberation for the feeding zones. However, the matters kept depaying for some reason or another, and till date there is no final order for earmarking the dog feeding zones.''
Pathak further added: "There should not be any further delay, because it is very important to feed the surviving local community dogs.''
The animal activists have also contacted the BMC senior veterinary official, Sachin Kulkarni, who has agreed to look into the issue of delays in allocating feeding zones there.
While the BMC head of veterinary department, Kalimpasha Pathan was unavailable for comment, another animal activist Dr Nandini Kulkarni, who was formerly an AWO with the high court appointed committee to monitor animal welfare laws in the state, said: "It is absolutely legal to feed local community animals. So, no individual or a group can deny feeders their Constitutional right to feed dogs or cats. I have also spoken to BMC's veterinary department and have been informed that a meeting of their officials will be held after April 15 in order to finalize the feeding spots inside the Goregaon ground.''
