Tragic loss for Gupta at Chess World Cup
CHENNAI: Opposite-coloured bishop endings are generally drawn in chess. But Abhijeet Gupta of India stretched a queen and opposite-coloured bishop ending to such an extent against Bu Xiangzhi of China thinking that he had a win in his second game of third round in the Chess World Cup on Sunday at Khanty-Mansiysk and tragically lost.
With the young Gupta's exit with a scoreline of 0.5-1.5, India's challenge in the World Cup has ended.

Sadly, Gupta would rue his missed chances in the game where he, in fact, had got the edge by taking a pawn and then the Chinese, rated almost 80 points above the Indian, played a tricky move with a pawn sacrifice. This allowed Bu's queen and bishop to put enough pressure on the white king as the Indian ran out of time.
The strongest woman player in chess history Judit Polgar of Hungary eliminated the top seed Sergey Karjakin of Russia with a 1.5-0.5 scoreline. In the reverse game with black, Judit needed only a draw but she was in a better position in a queen and pawn ending. However, she did not press with her extra pawn and took a draw with perpetual checks.
Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine fought back from the brink and defeated Emil Sutovsky of Israel in the second game to take the match to the tiebreakers. Though he was exchange down in Modern defence, Ivanchuk unleashed a tactical attack to win Sutovsky's rook after 36 moves. Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia staged a similar comeback against Gata Kamsky of US and took the match to the tiebreaker with a 1-1 scoreline.
