NEW DELHI: Did Delhi Daredevils err in sending Angelo Mathews ahead of Chris Morris against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday night? The move night have cost the Delhi a victory which looked possible till the 14th over of their innings.
Delhi, who were chasing 192 for victory, needed 87 off 41 deliveries when Sanju Samson fell at the start of the 14th over. Logically, it should have been the big-hitting Morris who should have walked out but to everyone's surprise, it was Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews who came out.
1x1 polls
Mathews, who is a slow starter and is coming out of an injury, failed to up the momentum and the team fell short by 15 runs.
While the team management may have its reasons, it still was a strange move. A quick look at IPL chases involving both Angelo and Morris shows that the latter has a better success rate in terms of batting average and strikerates in the slog overs. Besides, Morris has been in great form this IPL and is being hailed as the leading allrounder in the league.
Another line of thinking is that if Corey Anderson isn't fit to play then Carlos Brathwaite should have been the immediate replacement. The West Indian can bowl like Angelo and hit the ball quite a distance like Anderson.
Coming to the spin department, Shahbaz Nadeem is a big asset but the management hasn't been consistent with him. Frequent chopping and changing players at the start of the tournament - even after winning two consecutive games - may not be the best policy as the last two results have shown. The management, meanwhile, defended its approach by saying that they were rotating their players only to keep them fresh for the latter half of the tournament when the league enters home stretch.
Morris' batting average between 16 and 20 overs - 44.62, strike rate 172.46 Angelo's batting average between 16 to 20 overs -17.30, strike rate 143.81
