”Relationships matter more than money”: Padres’ Jackson Merrill reacts on nine-year $135 million extension with team

With the baseball season just getting better, the San Diego Padres have found a solid spot this season. The team also signed their center fielder, Jackson Merrill, to a new nine-year contract worth $135 million, ensuring that Merrill remains a key player on the team. Meanwhile, Merrill says it is important to have a relationship with the team.

Jackson Merrill will be staying with the San Diego Padres till 2031. It feels like a moment for him as he feels having a real connection with the team has helped him and made him a real player. Merrill says:
"An opportunity to sign with the San Diego Padres is enough for me, but I also feel like there comes a line where you know your worth, you know your value.
Further, Merrill said that there are teams offering a lot of money, but having a real relationship is something one can’t beat. He said:

“Listen, I know there are contracts out there that are beyond absurd, there's super amounts of money. But having a relationship with a real human being and a real team like I have here, you can't beat that."
The San Diego Padres managed to finish the home games and did not lose. Jackson Merrill, who was recently signed, was able to secure a home run since his contract, and also his second home run of the season. Talking about the stunning victory, Merrill said, he’d be disappointed if the team didn’t win. He told MLB.com:
"We're 7-0. If we didn't win that game today, I would've been pissed."
With the win on Wednesday, San Diego Padres’ record has been updated to 7-0, which is their best start to a season.
