NEW DELHI: Newly-elected International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Kirsty Coventry remained guarded on India's bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games. During a press conference after her election, Coventry acknowledged the ongoing process for selecting future host cities and expressed her intention to involve IOC members in the decision-making process.
Coventry stated that the current process for selecting host cities will likely continue for the next few months.
"At the end of the day there is a process in place and that process is ongoing and that will remain, as far as I know, for the next few months," Coventry said. "I do think that we need to involve the members in the selection of future host and I have few ideas and may be willing to share those, may be next week."
India has taken a concrete step towards hosting the 2036 Olympics by submitting an 'expression of interest' to the IOC's Future Host Commission.
This move has progressed India from the "Informal Dialogue" stage to the "Continuous Dialogue" stage, where the IOC conducts a feasibility study of the potential host's projects associated with the Games.
The next phase in the host election process would be the "Targeted Dialogue", which requires the submission of a formal bid specific to the edition being considered. The process culminates with a host election.
India is not the only country interested in hosting the 2036 Olympics. More than 10 nations, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, have expressed interest, although the exact number and identities of the officially interested parties are not yet known.
