When the NFL free agency frenzy kicks off, all eyes will be on Sam Darnold, one of the most sought-after quarterbacks on the market. With multiple teams competing for his services, the Pittsburgh Steelers have emerged as a potential suitor. However, not everyone is convinced that Pittsburgh is the right fit. NFL analyst Colin Cowherd has raised concerns about Darnold’s potential in the Steelers’ system, urging him to consider other destinations.
Pittsburgh Steelers: A risky move for Darnold?

Darnold, fresh off a stellar Pro Bowl season, is expected to command a lucrative multi-year contract. While the Steelers have shown interest, Cowherd remains skeptical about Pittsburgh’s ability to maximize his talents. According to Cowherd, Pittsburgh’s offensive system isn’t exactly known for elevating quarterbacks.
“For Sam Darnold, I'd be very wary of Pittsburgh. I do not think the Pittsburgh Steelers currently possess the ability to get the most out of a quarterback. That doesn’t mean Sam Darnold couldn't be a Steeler and be pretty good. …” Cowherd stated.
The Steelers' offensive struggles have been well-documented in recent seasons. Despite boasting a strong defense and talented playmakers, their inconsistent quarterback play has held them back. Adding Darnold to the mix might not be the game-changing move Pittsburgh needs, especially if they fail to build an offense tailored to his strengths.
Why Seattle could be a better option
If not Pittsburgh, then where should Darnold land? Cowherd suggests the Seattle Seahawks as a more appealing destination. With Geno Smith traded to the Raiders, Seattle is in the market for a quarterback, and Cowherd believes their offensive infrastructure is better suited for Darnold’s skill set.
Seattle’s front office, led by GM John Schneider, has a proven track record of surrounding quarterbacks with high-caliber talent. Their ability to draft and develop offensive weapons particularly at wide receiver could give Darnold a better chance to thrive.
"But I have more confidence in Seattle than I do in Pittsburgh which is telling you I have very little confidence in Pittsburgh offensively to get the best out of any quarterback,”Cowherd added. (via: Sportskeeda)

With legal tampering set to begin on March 11 and free agency officially opening on March 13, Darnold will soon have a decision to make. Projections indicate that he could land a massive deal, with Spotrac estimating a four-year, $160.49 million contract and PFF predicting a three-year, $123 million agreement.
For Darnold, choosing the right team isn’t just about money, it’s about finding a system that will help him reach his full potential. While Pittsburgh might be tempting, Seattle or another quarterback-friendly franchise could offer the best path to long-term success.
