Why is it so hard to imagine women in leadership roles? Why are we still living in the 18th century? Why can’t women lead in peace? Why is there so much animosity toward women who seek to improve their teams? Why comment on women in leadership roles? Why is it so hard to picture
Jessica Campbell as the first full-time female assistant coach in NHL’s history?
32 YO Jessica Campbell is a former CWHL player with top-tier numbers - 57 goals, 47 assists, 104 points in 41 games! And in July 2024, Jessica Campbell became the NHL’s first female assistant coach for the Seattle Kraken! Success speaks for itself. Yet, women will be always noticed for being women and not for their success or hard work. We are going on and on about womanhood because the comments that came for Seattle Kraken’s assistant coach, Jessica Campbell, are alarming and outright unwanted.
“Put she/her in the krakens bio that teams a bunch of women,” an IG user comments on Jessica Campbell’s IG post
Jessica Campbell, current assistant coach for the men’s ice hockey team in the NHL (National Hockey League)’s Seattle Kraken, shared an IG picture of herself suited up and looking up to the sky. Campbell captioned it, “To the young girls who need to hear it…” you can and you will.” 🩵”
Instagram users instantly reacted to this. And the kind of comments that came her way were so uncalled for. We mean- what did she do to get this? What’s her fault? That she’s the first female assistant coach in the NHL’s history? That she’s leading a team full of men? That she’s making way for future female coaches in the NHL? What’s her fault!? She being a woman is the fault?
One IG user commented on her hair,
”blonde look really elevates her game.”Another IG user appeared confused - was it the age of Jessica Campbell or her being a woman,
”And the youngest coach at 32, don’t have a problem with her being a woman coach but that’s very young for an nhl coach” A third IG user called all the players of Seattle Kraken women,
”Put she/her in the krakens bio that teams a bunch of women”A fourth IG user straightaway said,
”Does anybody watches them or care about them I don’t”A fifth IG user reacted,
”Hahahahhahahahhahahaha so unrealistic, far too many spectators in the seats!!!”A sixth IG user mentioned,
“No thanks…”A seventh IG user wrote,
”We supposed to believe Igor was trying there?”A eighth IG user wrote,
”There should be zero females in NHL All Star game. It should be NHL players only.!”A ninth IG user reacted,
”Lame…”A tenth IG user questioned,
“Which nhl team does she play for, again?”“There’s still work to do,” NHLPA captions for its X post on NHL/NHLPA Women’s History Month
NHLPA (National Hockey League Players’ Association) shared a tweet video of Jessica Campbell, where all the abovementioned comments were highlighted without names! An X user commented, “the only mistake that you made with this video was blurring the usernames. other than that, great job on calling out the misogyny that is still very present in the sport. love this 🫶”
At the end of the video came a wonderful message,
“Hockey has come a long way. But work toward a welcoming future is not done.” Acceptance of women in leadership roles is not done. Accepting Jessica Campbell for her assistant coach role in the NHL is not done! It’s not even ‘accepting’, it’s ‘welcoming’. Almost the bare minimum...
