and Qualcomm have collaborated to announce an initiative to provide up to eight years of Android software and security updates for select smartphones devices, in what can be called a major leap to enhance device lifespan and offer consumers unparalleled value.
Starting with smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform and launching with Android 15, users can expect an extended period of support, encompassing both Android OS and kernel upgrades, alongside security patches.
This initiative will also extend to new Snapdragon 8 and 7-series mobile platforms launching later this year, Qualcomm said.
Longest duration of software support on Qualcomm
The eight-year timeframe represents the longest duration of software support Qualcomm Technologies has offered for smartphone platforms, a significant improvement from previous standards. This extended support aligns with growing consumer demand for longer-lasting devices and addresses increasing cybersecurity concerns.
How the programme works
The program leverages advancements in Android architecture, particularly “Project Treble,” allowing for updates without requiring significant modifications to OEM code. This reduces costs for device manufacturers and facilitates the delivery of timely updates.
Key features of the programme
8 years of security updates: Security patches will be provided for the entire duration.
Android Common Kernel (ACK) upgrades: Two ACK upgrades will be included to ensure long-term security and compatibility.
Device eligibility
Smartphones powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite launching with Android 15 will be the first beneficiaries. New Snapdragon 8 and 7-series platforms will also be eligible later this year.
It is to be noted that the updates are on OEM discretion. While Qualcomm provides the support framework, the decision to implement the full eight years of updates rests with the device manufacturer.
