Instagram has launched a standalone app called Edits. This new app is designed to help creators shoot, edit, and organise video projects directly on their phones while offering features similar to those found in TikTok’s sister app, CapCut. The app includes tools such as background replacement, automatic captioning, and AI-powered image-to-video conversion. It also provides access to performance insights for creators. Edits is seen as Meta’s reply to ByteDance’s CapCut, which has gained popularity as a mobile and desktop video editing tool.
The app was introduced and made available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in January. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced the app via a Reel posted on the social media platform at the same time, where he said: “Edits is more than a video editing app; it’s a full suite of creative tools. There will be a dedicated tab for inspiration, another for keeping track of early ideas, a much higher-quality camera (which I used to record this video), all the editing tools you’d expect, the ability to share drafts with friends and other creators, and — if you decide to share your videos on Instagram — powerful insights into how those videos perform.”

Instagram’s new Edit app: How it works

In a blog post, Instagram-parent Meta explains that with this app, it aims to offer creative tools that can help creators express themselves not just on Instagram and Facebook, but also across other platforms.
Recognising that video production often involves multiple apps and complex workflows, the company introduced Edits to streamline the process. The app offers a dedicated space for video creation with features such as:
Simplified workflow: Users can capture videos up to 10 minutes long, manage projects easily, and export high-quality content. Videos can be shared directly to Instagram and Facebook or exported for use on other platforms without watermarks.
Advanced editing tools: Edits provides a frame-accurate timeline, clip-level editing, auto-enhance options, green screen effects, and transitions.
Insightful feedback: The app includes real-time data on performance factors, such as skip rate, helping creators understand what works and where they can improve.
The company also claims that since last year, it has collaborated with several creators, tested various concepts, and incorporated their feedback throughout the process. Additionally, a select group of creators was recently given early access to Edits to get their feedback on the app's features. Meta also noted that it is currently working on adding new features to the app, including:
Keyframes: Adjust video timing, motion, and effects at precise moments.
Modification: Use AI effects to quickly alter the look and feel of videos.
Collaboration: Share drafts with friends, creators, or brands for feedback and creative input.
Creativity: Expand options for fonts, text animations, transitions, voice effects, filters, and royalty-free music.
