WhatsApp brings new Typing indicator feature: Here’s what’s changing
Meta-owned WhatsApp is introducing a new feature for its users. Called the Typing Indicators, the feature allows users to see when someone is typing, whether in one-on-one or group chats. It is being rolled out to all Android and iOS users through the latest app update.
In a press release, WhatsApp said that the new typing indicators feature is “designed to enhance real-time engagement in chats.”
How WhatsApp Typing indicator feature works
With the new WhatsApp Typing indicator feature, users will now see a visual “...” cue at the bottom of the chat screen when someone begins typing in a group or 1:1 chat. This cue will be present along with their profile picture, making it easier to see who is actively engaged in the conversation. At present, users see “Typing…” whenever one person types in a chat.
“This update is particularly helpful in group chats, allowing users to quickly identify who is present and typing at any moment,” the company said.

WhatsApp gets government notice

In another news, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has reportedly urged Meta Platforms, the parent company of WhatsApp, to address scams originating on the messaging platform. This follows a request from India’s telecom regulator for intervention. According to an Economic Times report quoting MeitY secretary S. Krishnan, the ministry is actively addressing the issue with Meta. “This is an ongoing process. Scammers will always find new ways, which is a cause for concern,” Krishnan told ET.

Krishnan further said that the government is in a regular dialogue with stakeholders particularly WhatsApp and added that users need to be cautious and raise complaints even in the case of WhatsApp. “If there is some wrong content, there is a process. The IT rules require these companies to have a grievance officer with whom users can raise issues. They can raise it either within the app or outside. In case, the issue is not dealt with, there is also a grievance appellate committee.”
