JK Rowling, author of the bestselling Harry Potter series, celebrated a UK Supreme Court ruling stating transgender women do not fit the legal definition of a “woman”. Taking to microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), Rowling wrote “It took three extraordinary, tenacious Scottish women with an army behind them to get this case heard by the Supreme Court and, in winning, they’ve protected the rights of women and girls across the UK. @ForWomenScot, I’m so proud to know you”. In another post, she wrote “I love it when a plan comes together”.
The post caught Elon Musk’s attention who replied to it with fire emojis.

What is the UK court’s ruling on gender

In a landmark ruling, the UK's highest court said that only biological and not trans women meet the definition of a woman under equality laws. The court ruled that single-sex services for women—such as shelters, hospital wards, and sports—can lawfully exclude trans women, clarifying a previously unclear area of the law.
Announcing the ruling, Deputy President of the Supreme Court, Patrick Hodge, said: “The unanimous decision of this court is that the terms ‘women’ and ‘sex’ in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex.”
“But we counsel against reading this judgment as a triumph for one or more groups in our society at the expense of another — it is not,” he added.
Transgender rights have become a deeply debated issue in Britain and other countries worldwide. Some critics argue that conservative groups have used identity politics to target minorities, while others believe that support for transgender rights has, at times, come at the cost of protections for biological women.

Elon Musk’s views on transgender issues

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has publicly expressed critical views on transgender issues. Musk has made several controversial remarks regarding transgender individuals:. In 2020, he tweeted "Pronouns suck," which was widely interpreted as dismissive of preferred gender pronouns.
He has also opposed gender-affirming care for minors. The Tesla CEO has strained relationship with his transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson. Vivian legally changed her name and gender, distancing herself from her father. Musk has attributed their estrangement to what he calls the "woke mind virus".
