Into Ladakh’s wilderness
The Markha Valley is located inside Hemis National Park, the biggest national park in India. It is also one of the most remotely located places in India. Trekking through this, one gets a chance to witness Ladakh's stunning landscapes, which include snow-capped peaks, high-altitude desert, lush green oases, and the winding Markha River.

The Tea House Trek
Markha Valley Trek is also known as the Tea House Trek for a reason. It is because the trek offers trekkers the chance of staying in local homestays and experiencing the teahouses. Along the route, you'll come across several villages that provide a glimpse into the traditional Ladakhi way of life.

Unforgettable encounters
As the valley is located deep within Hemis National Park, it is important to note that there is a high chance that you will come across wild animals like ibex, blue sheep, marmots, and if you are lucky, even the elusive snow leopard.

The trek
It takes about 8 to 10 days to complete the Markha Valley Trek. The trek covers roughly 120 km, beginning from the charming village of Chilling, through the most difficult phase of Nimaling - Kongmaru La - Chokdo, and finally Shang Sumdo and Leh.
The trek demands a certain level of fitness as the trails can be quite challenging in some places, especially the descent from Kongmaru La. The pass is a steep downward journey that will test your patience and endurance. The view, however, is worth all the trouble. The spectacular view of the winding Indus River and the Ladakh ranges will be permanently imprinted on your mind.
Trekking essentials
The most important thing about this trek is acclimatisation. Ladakh's high altitude can pose a challenge for trekkers. Spending a few days in Leh before starting the trek is of utmost importance as it will help trekkers to acclimatise and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

Thirdly, staying hydrated is crucial at high altitudes. So it is of utmost importance that you carry a reusable water bottle and purification tablets to ensure safe water throughout the trek.
Lastly, the trek will not be possible without proper permits. Ladakh is a sensitive zone, ecologically as well as geographically. The permit for the trek can be obtained in Leh. You can rely on your trusted local guide to assist you with permits and provide valuable insights into the region.
