Tina Fey and
Amy Poehler have been Hollywood's go-to comedic team for years, but fans were thinking they might join forces again for a reboot of The Golden Girls. They'll be disappointed. Fey recently shot down rumors of a remake during an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of her new Netflix comedy, The Four Seasons.
The issue arose when Fey was presented with a mock promotional poster of herself, Poehler,
Maya Rudolph, and
Lisa Kudrow dressed as the legendary "Golden Girls" cast. The June 2024 release poster, allegedly produced by satirical Facebook page YODA BBY ABY, was said to have been produced in March 2024. The poster displayed the actresses dressed in aging wigs, creating confusion and interest among fans.
Responding to the poster, Fey had this to say with her own brand of humor, "If this duped you, you may be a Boomer. And if you're Gen X and this duped you, go to a hospital. I would never lay hands on this. This is too good. The original is … those ladies can't be touched."
Maya Rudolph also responded to the viral photo while appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, referring to the fan-made poster as "fascinating."
The original Golden Girls, which starred Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty, aired from 1985 to 1992 and is still a treasured favorite.
Creator Susan Harris made it quite clear in a 2017 interview with Entertainment Weekly that there would never be an official reboot, declaring, "Golden Girls would not be Golden Girls without that cast."
Although a Golden Girls revival is on the back burner, viewers can still get a dose of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's on-screen comedic chemistry in person. The duo are currently taking their show, Tina Fey & Amy Poehler: Restless Leg Tour, on the road.
Fey, however, left the impression that she is directing her attention towards bringing along new talent. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she admitted, "The urge to hide and retire is very strong because I do think it's time to help new voices get in the mix."
"It's something I'm already doing, but I want to do more," she went on. "Even walking over here I was like, 'I am so tired of hearing from me. Surely everyone else is tired of hearing from the same people over and over again.'"
While a nostalgic reboot isn't on the horizon, everyone can breathe a sigh of relief in knowing Fey and Poehler continue to bring their sense of humor to fans — just not in association with The Golden Girls.
