Who Was Igor Kirillov? Why Putin's Nuclear Force General Was On West's 'Kill List' Explained

Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, a senior Russian officer in charge of the country’s nuclear protection forces, has been killed in Moscow. Kirillov, who was a key figure in President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, headed Russia’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection troops. He was killed outside a block of flats located about four miles (7 km) southeast of the Kremlin. His death comes at a time of heightened tensions, as Putin has been issuing nuclear warnings to NATO, further escalating concerns over the conflict.
