'You're next': Michelle Obama reveals Barack's shocking two-word joke after her mother's death
Barack Obama told Michelle she's up next after her mother passed away in 2024.
Michelle Obamahas revealed a strange comment that her husband former president Barack Obama made when she lost her mother. "Well, you're next up," Barack told Michelle jokingly. "I was like, ‘I’m not really ready to be next up,’ " Michelle Obama said in the recent episode of her podcast with her brother Craig Robinson."I told him, ‘You’re next up and Craig is next up.’ I delegate that power to you."Michelle Obama's mother Marian Robinson died in May 2024 at the age of 86. As the siblings spoke about their mother's death in their recent podcast, Craig said their mother was preparing them for her death for a very long time. “The listeners should know that mom’s been threatening to drop dead for 20 years,” Craig said. “She has been preparing us for this. So, she left very direct instructions on what she wanted and how she wanted things to be. We had to take that into account.”Michelle spoke about her mother at length in this episode. “It’s a major shift in your life. I don’t care how old you get. Mom and Dad are Mom and Dad,” Michelle said. “Even when I was taking care of Mom, I still gotta listen to her. I can sort of boss her around but in the end, she’s my mother.”“There’s a comfort level in that, knowing that no matter how wise or experienced I am in the world, mom always knew more.”
The podcast started after Michelle Obama remained absent from public life for a long time, triggering speculations of their divorce. She did not accompany Barack Obama to Jimmy Carter's funeral and then Donald Trump's inauguration. But now she is regular with her weekly podcast, addressing every issue of her life without any hesitation. On skipping Donald Trump's inauguration, Michelle said she did not care and wanted a break from always doing the right things. On speculations over her marriage problems, she admitted how she struggled to keep her family together but dismissed divorce speculations and said both Barack and she are not that type of people to give up on each other.
